Heading into the 2016 season as the most experienced defensive back in the Ohio State secondary, Conley was a headache for opposing quarterbacks. He allowed only 37 percent of passes he faced to be completed.
At the combine, Conley outlined his best attribute as “the ability to play press man and versatility at nickel and corner.”
His confidence allowed him to trick passers into thinking they had an open target before flying out of nowhere to force a turnover. He did this twice against Wisconsin. His first diving grab was overturned, but Conley atoned for that later in the second half with a pick that counted (via Land-Grant Holy Land).
It wouldn’t have made much sense for a team without an established passer like the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers, or Chicago Bears to take Webb. The last thing the Cal product needs is to be put in the same position as Jared Goff and asked to step in as a rookie.
Patience is rare in the NFL, but the best situation for Webb is to have time to sit and adjust to the challenges of the league like Aaron Rodgers was able to do early in his career with the Green Bay Packers. Luckily, he’ll get that with the Giants, where Eli Manning isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.
The opportunity that is now presented to the Stars is, to put it lightly, quite an incredible one.
Without the luxury of high picks over the last few drafts, Dallas’ prospect pool has inevitably fallen behind that of other teams, making their projection of the future a little bit more murky. The addition of an elite young talent this year, however, has the potential to give the organization Cheap Zach Parise Wild Jerseys a much-needed shot in the arm.
And make no mistake, that potential is very real with this upcoming draft.
