The draft will again be held at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., for the sixth straight year.
The 2018 NBA Draft lottery was held May 15 in Chicago — the first time the lottery drawing has been held outside of New York and New Jersey.
Murphy’s career began with a foot injury and ended soon after that. It was reported that Murphy did not take his career seriously enough, didn’t push himself hard enough to succeed. The Blazers believed he was overweight and suspended him after he missed training work. He was released early in his second season. He later played some in the United States Basketball League.
Smith averaged better than 26 points in his final season at BYU, but Boston ignored the fact he was 23 years old when he rang up that number and selected him in a prime spot. He wasn’t long enough, quick enough or strong enough to excel in the NBA. He was off to Europe after two disappointing seasons, returned for a short stint with the Clippers and then went back to Spain. His career wasn’t as empty as some of the players on this list — but Tim Hardaway went off the board with the next pick in ’89.
The Hawks have the No. 3 pick and may very well take him to play alongside Dennis Schroder, which would give them a solid backcourt.
However, if the Hawks decide to go another direction, they could trade down to No. 5, as the Mavericks have been rumored to want Doncic. They could also move down and grab two picks from the Clippers (No. 12 and No. 13) if they so choose.
Expect trades to begin happening at No. 3 or No. 4 as the Grizzlies have also been rumored to be willing to move the No. 4 pick and have had as many as seven teams showing interest.
In 1996, the supposed logic was reasonable behind trading a high school shooting guard for a proven center in Vlade Divac. Bryant fell all the way to No. 13, so don’t let anyone tell you that this trade looked horrible at the time — especially given the since-corroborated reports that Bryant tried to force his way to Los Angeles. But Bryant was right there, in the Hornets hands, and he didn’t have nearly as much leverage as his actions suggested. And moving Divac opened the door for the Lakers to bring in Shaquille O’Neal.
